How Canada is expertly trolling the U.S. with a coffee cup

Canadian cafés owners are serving up a seriously steaming cup of shade.

There are a lot of things Canada is known for: universal healthcare, hockey, and an uncanny ability to remain unbothered.

And now we can add another to the list: masterful trolls. With Donald Trump taking another swing at their economy, Canadians have decided to fight back in the most beautifully petty way possible: by renaming the Americano.

Goodbye, Americano. Hello, Canadiano.

In response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and his bizarre push to make Canada the 51st state, coffee shops across the country are rebranding the Americano as the “Canadiano.”

Because nothing says “we’re not part of America” quite like taking a staple of the café menu and giving it a proudly Canadian spin.

Toronto’s Café Belém was one of the first to make the switch.

Owner William Oliveira told The Washington Post that he isn’t trying to make his shop political, but he felt it was time to “stand up for being ourselves and reminding other people… that we’re not to be pushed around and bullied by others.”

Translation: Canada’s done being the polite neighbor while Trump throws rocks over the fence.

A perfectly brewed protest

The Canadiano movement has spread across cities like Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto, with café owners embracing the stunt as a way to clap back at Trump’s economic threats.

One Ottawa café owner summed it up: “We don’t need any American products right now. It seems like a really good way to say we’re Canadian.”

And if renaming coffee wasn’t enough, other low-key Canadian protest efforts include:

Oh, and thousands of Canadians have signed a petition to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship.

The internet loves a good troll

Naturally, social media is eating this up. One user declared:

“This is exactly the type of petty shit that I enjoy.”

Another chimed in:

“That’s some Gulf of America energy.”

And one particularly enthusiastic commenter suggested taking things further:

“American here. May I suggest a ‘Gulp of Mexico’ and a ‘Denali Decaf’? Some of us refuse to bow to the Orange Mussolini and his ridiculous renamings.”

From “freedom fries” to “Canadianos”

This isn’t the first time a country has used food-based mockery as a political statement. Back in 2003, U.S. lawmakers renamed French fries “freedom fries” in protest of France opposing the Iraq War. That one… didn’t exactly age well.

But unlike that cringeworthy moment, Canada’s rebranding of the Americano isn’t about blind nationalism—it’s about drawing a line in the snow. It’s a subtle, cheeky way of saying: We see what you’re doing, Trump. And we raise you one Canadiano.

Will the “Canadiano” stick?

Some café owners say they’re keeping the new name permanently. Others are waiting to see how long Trump’s tariff tantrum lasts. But one thing is clear:

Canada may be polite, but it absolutely knows how to troll with class.

Now, who’s up for a double-double and a Canadiano?
